925 silver (sterling silver) tarnishes due to the presence of hydrogen sulphide in the air, as well as sulphurous vapors from the skin, cosmetics or medicines. With matt-brushed silver jewellery, you can prevent this process by regularly dipping it in a commercially available silver dipping bath, e.g. Hagerty. A soft brush, e.g. a toothbrush, can be used to help with this. Brilliantly polished silver jewelery can also be dipped, but then do not finish with a brush, but with a silver cleaning cloth after drying.
